Want to know the very best way to spy on your online competition? You should – because if you’re not spying, you’re not trying! (and worse, your competition most likely is doing it to you) The simple truth is that there are a veritable cacophony of ways you can spy on your online competition these days, and in my view, they are all part and parcel of a well designed strategy for smartly keeping abreast of what’s moving and shaking in your market.
So am I going to recommend you go out and buy one of those black hat tools to scrape your competitors content? Absolutely not.
You don’t need to do anything immoral, unethical or illegal to become a smarter marketer, and do it in a hurry.
What do I do for EVERY new niche I enter on the very first day? Simple! I identify the people who I believe are making money. I sign up for their lists. I engage in their sequence. I model their landing pages. Do they have an affiliate program? If they do…..I want to sign up for it. Better yet, I want to know who their best affiliates are, and why! Who is linking to them and why? If I want to offer a similar program, this obviously gives me a rapid fire head start in knowing who is doing well already, how to contact them if need be, and why they’re succeeding too.
What about keyword tools for competitive intelligence?
Yes, I use these as well – and yes they do open a wide window into a lot of what your competition is doing on the pay per click side, which can be incredibly enlightening, and save you a ton of time to boot.
Remember, spying on your online competition is NOT unethical – it’s tantamount to walking into your competitors off line store? Don’t you think the president of McDonald’s has had his share of meals at Burger King? Of course he has..:-) It’s the very same thing here, just with a lot less calories.
