When will I likely be able to actually purchase a Windows 7 computer? Will it cost more at first?
I’m holding off on buying my next laptop until Windows 7 is available. When is that most likely to happen?
And does ordering a computer with a new version of Windows generally cost more when it’s first released? (As compared to the situation with Vista right now, where it usually costs MORE to get the older XP.)
Thanks!
The Release Candidate is expected May 5.
A free upgrade system for new computers purchased with Vista Home Premium or above is expected to begin June 26, 2009, but hasn’t been confirmed.
The final version is expected later this year, or perhaps the start of 2010.
Computers tend to go down in pricing as technology improves anyway, but the installed OS doesn’t tend to vary the cost a great deal. There may be increased demand in general that impacts pricing, however.
Anyway, you’ll likely be able to purchase a computer eligible for a Windows 7 upgrade in late June, but it wouldn’t technically have Windows 7 on it yet.
