There are in short three versions of Windows 7. There are a few more versions, but these are not intended for the normal home user market, such as K-versions, N-versions, Starter and Enterprise. You can choose between Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. You can compare these three versions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/compare If you do not require to switch between languages and if you will only use your laptop privately and you will not join a company domain, Home Premium is the right choice, as it is for 99% of all home users.
On the before mentioned website upgrades are mentioned. Since you currently own Windows Vista Home Basic, you are not allowed and you technically cannot upgrade to Windows 7. You will therefore need to purchase a full version of Windows 7 Home Premium.
Having enough disk space available is not enough, your computer will need to meet the hardware requirements as well. To find out if your laptop is capable of running Windows 7, download and install the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor before making any purchase: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx
