Windows 7 upgrade problem, cant retrieve info about disks?
I am upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium from Windows Vista Home Premium using an install disk I bought from Best Buy. The auto run screen comes up and I choose to install Windows 7. It starts to go to the next step when I get an error stating:
“Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer.”
how can I fix this?
Also, I have run the windows adviser and I pass the test.
I run an hp pavilion Model #: a6242n
I have solved the problem, it had something to do with the virtual drive. I just had to change it to start since it was stopped.
Unfortunately I cannot provide you with much help as this problem is probably very machine-specific… and those are details you have not provided.
Now I can only think of a few things so bear with me… the first thing is that your hard drive is not partitioned to a format in which Windows 7 can read. Run a live disc such as GParted from a Ubuntu Live disc and be sure your primary partition is NTFS.
Next, be sure the drive is spinning up and running properly… When booting from a CD, sometimes a computer will power off the hard drive in order to conserve power/ data, and thus, if its not running, Windows won’t be able to read any info about it. Try finding a setting in your BIOS regarding this.
Another guess of mine would be an incompatibility with 32 and 64 bit operating systems… I personally do not own Windows 7 (yet) so I do not know if there 64 bit kernel will also run in 32-but mode, but if it doesn’t and your trying to install a 64-bit onto a Vista 32-bit, the install disc is obviously having a problem finding a 64-bit Vista, which is not there.
Hope that gave you a little lead to help solve your problem.
